Population growth in U.S. prisons, 1980-1996
Article Abstract:
Reasons for the growth of state and federal incarceration rates of between 1980 and 1996 are given. Drug offending is the key factor, with imprisonment for that categoy of offenses growing ten times, and assault and sexual assault occupy second and third places.Sentencing increases account for the growth in state incarceration rates for nondrug offenses.

Medical care in prisons
Article Abstract:
Issues regarding intervention by the federal courts as the reasons for the establishment of prisoners' right to adequate medical care are discussed. After this right was established, standards were promulgated, staffs expanded, and providers from the surrounding community called in to fill the gaps. Spending for prisoner health care rose dramatically.

Issues regarding the fivefold increase in American incarceration numbers between 1973 and 1997 are discussed. The combination of the broad public appeal of a "law and order" policy in an era of fractionated politics, unforeseen consequences of the war on drugs, and the increased reflexivity of the justice system are the most likely causes.
